April 14, 2008 From Martha Runyon:

LEGAL TOPICS CRITICAL FOR THE ARTS DISCUSSED IN PATERSON

The Passaic County Cultural and Heritage Council (PCCHC) at Passaic County Community College (PCCC) will present a workshop conducted by the New Jersey Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts on Thursday, May 8th at 1PM at the College's Paterson Campus. Tracey I. Batt, Esq., Executive Director of NJVLA, will give an overview of NJVLA's legal services for the New Jersey arts community in the Paterson Room of Academic Hall, Broadway at Memorial Drive, in downtown Paterson. While directed to area arts organizations, artists, and community organizations planning arts and cultural programs, the workshop is open to the general public. Admission is free, but registration is required.

Ms. Batt will discuss a variety of legal topics critical to the New Jersey arts community, including laws governing intellectual property, copyrights, music licensing, and other arts related legal issues. NJVLA focuses particularly on supporting low income artists and non-profit arts organizations. They assist artists and arts and cultural organizations with arts-related legal issues by referring them to volunteer attorneys. Following the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a question and answer session.

Tracey I. Batt joined NJVLA following two years as Associate Director and Legal Services Manager at Philadelphia Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts. Prior to that, she practiced law for seven years at Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP in New York, NY, concentrating her practice in the areas of copyright and music licensing law. Ms. Batt holds a J.D. from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University, an M.A. in Art History and Museum Studies from Virginia Commonwealth University, and a B.A. in Radio-Television-Film from Temple University. Ms. Batt lectures extensively on copyright and music licensing law.
