Artist, gallery owner
LAMBERTVILLE — Barry Snyder died Tuesday in Princeton. He was 79.
Mr. Snyder was an artist and gallery owner. He owned the former Princeton Gallery of Fine Art on Chambers Street in Princeton, which was opened in 1970.
Born in Newark, he graduated from Trenton High School. After completing studies at the Tyler School of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, he worked in Trenton at his family’s business, Snyder’s Sporting Goods, run by his father, Harry Snyder.
In 1970, he founded the Princeton Gallery of Fine Art with his wife Arline. The gallery was noted for its exhibitions of regionally and nationally acclaimed artists.
In the early 1980s he left the art business to devote himself to his own painting, sculpture and photography.
During his 20-year residency in Lambertville, Mr. Snyder’s work was widely exhibited throughout the region, including the Phillips Mill Annual Juried Show, the Ellarslie Trenton City Museum, the James A. Michener Art Museum and the Hunterdon Art Center. He garnered numerous awards for his work including the Phillips Mill awards for sculpture in 1988, 1991 and 1993, the Ellarslie President’s Award, the Stoner Family Award for Painting and the Winners Four at the Hunterdon Art Center.
In 1995, together with longtime resident artist Peggy Lewis, he established the ABC Gallery in the Lambertville Public Library as a showcase and springboard for local artists. Mr. Snyder was an active member of Artsbridge, the Princeton Artists Alliance and the Trenton Artists Workshop Association. He served on the advisory board of the Children’s Gallery at the Michener Art Museum since its inception in 2000 and acted as curator for the Children’s Gallery art exhibitions for over four years.
He was an active supporter of the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen and was involved in the Big Brother program in Lambertville.
He is survived by his children Gary, Jill and Kim; sister Claire Miller; former wife Arline Cogan; and grandchildren Rachel, Daniel, Sasha and Elizabeth.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Van Horn-McDonough Funeral Home, 21 York St., Lambertville.
Interment will follow at the Harbourton Cemetery.
