Feb 24, 2008 Call for Entries - 26th Ellarslie Open

A SHORT HISTORY OF THE ELLARSLIE OPEN AND THE BEN WHITMIRE PURCHASE AWARD
As the museum’s first director, Ben Whitmire both expanded and accessioned work to the collection. To focus on the local art influences, he immediately started the contemporary exhibitions and in 1982, because of a suggestion from Mary Yess, Ben started the Ellarslie Open.
Since that time, the Museum Society has had a minimum of five contemporary exhibits yearly, featuring nearly five hundred local and regional artists.
The Ellarslie Open has become a significant regional exhibition, while realizing the importance and potential of emerging artists. In 2002, the Acquisitions Committee of the Trenton Museum Society began to cull the work in the Ellarslie Open as their primary source of contemporary purchases for the museum.
In 2003 Ben left us. While his wit and wisdom are greatly missed, his legacy is evident in the continued success of Ellarslie as a focal point of the city’s burgeoning and nurturing arts community. In 2004, the twenty-second year of the Ellarslie Open, the Trenton Museum Society was proud to honor this man and his legacy by instituting the Ben Whitmire Purchase Award for the permanent collection of the museum.
