Historic Preservation Specialist

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1. Reviews submissions and prepares draft letters in response to NJ TRANSIT project regulatory and technical assistance submissions to the State Historic Preservation Office, and helps in ensuring expedited approvals under applicable state and federal regulations.

2. Coordinates with NJ TRANSIT project managers and consultants, and assists in the preparation of documentation, to ensure compliance with state and federal historic regulatory requirements and approval by applicable regulatory agencies.

3. Conducts research and analysis of historic issues and projects to ensure that appropriate historic evaluation and studies have been performed to meet the obligations of the various funding agencies. 

4. Assists in negotiating agreements with municipalities and third parties concerning development and improvement projects involving NJ TRANSIT facilities to maximize effectiveness of NJ TRANSIT capital projects.

5. Guides capital project implementation by influencing design and scope to ensure that capital projects meet historic standards prior to submission for approval and to reduce review duration.

6. Performs site visits to ensure adherence to conditions of historic regulatory approvals, and to ensure that project revisions continue to meet applicable historic standards.

WORK HOURS AND LOCATIONS:

Maximum 25 hours per week, working under the direction of State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) staff; minimum two days per week working at SHPO in Trenton , and remainder of time working at NJ TRANSIT Headquarters or conducting site visits.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS REQUIRED:

Baccalaureate degree in Planning, Architecture, Public Administration or related area; three or more years experience in conducting or overseeing the preparation of historic preservation analysis; Master's degree in Historic Preservation desired.
