Jan 8, 2008 The History Committee of West Cape May is a small group, with about 4 active members, who have installed a series of captioned, framed-and-matted, historic photos on three walls of the Borough Hall meeting room, so that all local residents may better understand their community's past. Recently, they unveiled an original mural, created by a local, professional West Cape May artist, which depicts the Borough's history.
The Committee also hired architectural historians Joan Berkey and Michael Conley to conduct a survey of the buildings in the Borough's historic district. They used an award from our Freeholders Cultural Fund to help to pay for that. The architectural historians presented a Power Point summary of their findings at a recent public meeting, when the mural was officially unveiled. The creation of both the historic district and a Historic Preservation Commission were efforts led by the History Committee.
The district and the Commission came in response to the demolition of one historic house in West Cape May . The Committee has also worked with the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts in Cape May to present a tour of historic houses in West Cape May.
The History Committee of West Cape May is looking for an artist to work with them to create historic site signs. Interested artists should e-mail Capebeach@aol.com .
