“The Road Not Taken, -- Journeys into Nature is the latest exhibition sponsored by D&R Greenway Land Trust. The art represents many media. A significant proportion celebrate preserved land, especially in our region. The art may be enjoyed at D&R Greenway, beginning October 15. These works were inspired by beauties to which artists were drawn while out on the trail. “Not taken” refers to ‘not yet explored', as well as ‘not taken by developers'. Curated by Jack Koeppel, “The Road Not Taken” may be viewed on business days between 10 and 4, in D&R Greenway's Marie L. Matthews Gallery. The Johnson Education Center is located at One Preservation Place (off Rosedale Road), Princeton 08540. Call to be sure the galleries are not engaged that day as conference space. This exhibit is underwritten in part by a generous donation from PNC Bank.
Visitors may meet the artists of “The Road Not Taken” at the Artists' Reception, Thursday, November 8, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Free and open to all, reservations by October 25 are urged: 609-924-4646 , X 131. All art is for sale, 35% of the proceeds benefiting D&R Greenway's ongoing land preservation and stewardship mission.
Because of the Robert Frost connection in this exhibition's title, poets are particularly invited to visit the exhibit from October 15 th , and/or attend the November 8 Opening, to choose a work of art to inspire their own work. Poems triggered by “The Road Not Taken” should be e-mailed by November 20 to cedelmann@drgreenway.org : limit 2 entries per poet. Each entry should include the name of the work of art and artist who inspired the poem, along with the poet's name and e-mail information. Betty Lies, Cool Woman Poet, and Carlos Hernández Peña , Ragged Sky Poet, will serve as editors. At the December 13 th Poets' & Artists' Reception, chosen poets will read beside the artist whose visual creativity called forth new poems: 5:30–7:30 p.m. at D&R Greenway. Reservations are requested for this free reception, 609-924-4646.
A companion exhibition will grace the Olivia Rainbow Gallery, titled “All the Difference…” This will feature children's graphite drawings, inspired by the expressive art of “Road Not Taken” artist, Alice Sims-Gunzenhauser. Children created this work with Heather Barros, Curator of the Olivia Rainbow Gallery. Ms. Barros teaches year- round at Art Collaborations, Drake's Corner Road, Princeton: 609-430-1036 . Children from kindergarten through high school are invited to view “The Road Not Taken”, from October 15 th on, creating their own art in response. Art in any media, unframed, unmatted, may be brought to D&R Greenway on Thursday, December 6 th to be featured from December 10 to January 11. Names and contact information should be on each submission.
BACKGROUND
Curator Jack Koeppel has gathered a broad range of both artists and media for this “Exhibition of Art Inspired by Wanderings in the Woods.” Works in oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, graphite, aluminum, paper wrap, and cast bronze join photographs and baskets crafted of pine needles, birch bark, and waxed linen. All are intended to evoke nature memories and lure viewers to new trail-wanderings, inspiring conservation and stewardship of natural spaces.
Every D&R Greenway art exhibition illustrates and supports its urgent mission of land preservation and stewardship. “The Road Not Taken” was conceived to raise awareness of the beauty and accessibility of trails, of natural lands and remaining open spaces in our region. If development continues at the present rate, New Jersey will be the first state to be completely built out, within 30 years. This exhibition showcases the intense interaction between artists and nature, reminding guests to preserve trails so that they are, indeed, “not taken.”
One of New Jersey's leading land preservation organizations, D&R Greenway Land Trust is about to achieve its 10,000 th acre in central New Jersey. D&R Greenway's home, in a restored circa-1900's barn, was named the Johnson Education Center to honor its purpose of providing a vital venue for exhibitions, lectures, and professional workshops. An expansive array of individuals and groups regularly rent the JEC for seminars and retreats, thus expanding the reach of D&R Greenway artists.
